Explain the process that was performed so that there were no entries in the root directory and File Allocation Table (FAT), yet the contents of each file remained in the data area.

Bonus Answer:
In this case, the single process performed was a Microsoft quick format of the disk. A quick format will clear out root and FAT but will not touch the data area. A Microsoft full format will clear out root, FAT and the data area. This discussion only applies to floppy disks, as results will very with other media types. There are also other utilities and methods available to achieve similar results.
